Test if your USB flash drive is Genuine ( Original ) or a Fake ( Counterfeit / Cheap Duplicate)

April 5th, 2009 No comments

If you have bought an USB flash / thumb drive, then a word of Caution…..because many sellers on popular sites on eBay are offering its users Fake / Counterfeit drives in disguise of Good Brands like Sony, Corsair, Kingston etc.

Many drives are coming out of china which look just like the Originals but are unreliable, sometimes contain spyware / keyloggers or show incorrect memory capacity.

If you have a drive which shows incorrect capacity, opt for an replacement right away and do not store any confidential or private data on the flash drive.

If you are looking for a new USB Flash drive / Memory Card etc. then you *must* buy from an authorised seller. Generally a list of authorised sellers is available on the manufacturers website.

If you have purchased from eBay or other third-party client, then it makes sense to test your newly purchased drive for genuineness.

H2testw is a software which checks your drive for genuineness and generates a report. It has been awarded Gold Standard for its detection capabilities.

The software is small, easy to use and no need to install. It has English / German language options.

FireWire / IEEE 1394 standard of Communication

February 2nd, 2009 No comments

Do you use USB and think its pretty fast? …… Well there’s another technology which is as fast (or probably faster) as USB 2.0. This connection technology is called FireWire or IEEE 1394 Interface.

The IEEE 1394 interface was developed by IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers.) and was introduced as a high speed communication interface in 2003. It has since then gained popularity but USB still remains a more popular choice and more devices still use the USB system for communication.

The diagram to the left is the Older IEEE 1394 socket but was later modified into smaller form factor as shown in the right. (Infact it is much smaller than the USB Port in terms of size.)

Now a word about performance……

Firewire is the favorite when it comes to performace as it has superb speeds and data is transferred very quickly and its performance is comparable to USB 2.0. Hence it has found itself place in many high performace devices such as Portable HDD’s, Digital cameras and other devices.

Hence the next time you go for shopping an device, don’t forget to look out for an firewire port for a better performance. Have a nice time….. :)

Autorun Viruses / Trojan Horse Malware

January 24th, 2009 Comments off

Do you regularly plug-in your USB pen / thumb drive into your computer. Then you are at a greater risk of autorun viruses.

These viruses embed themselves to the system by modifying the autorun.inf entry files of all or some local drives / partitions and run whenever you double click or open your drives. It works in the background and many a times an anti-virus software doen not detect it but it keeps infecting all the removable devices that are connected to the infected computer. This in turn spreads the infection and keeps the virus chain alive.

If you try to delete the autorun.inf file from your drive then you cannot access the drive directly by double clicking. And the virus automatically creates a new autorun.inf file to keep itself *ALIVE*

Now some free tools available on the internet help your PC to be protected before it gets infected with such kind of viruses.

Below are the links for downloading the Autorun Virus Removal Software.
