Make the most with Linux – Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva – Guide

September 3rd, 2009 No comments

So, you got a new computer and that new internet connection, when you think about operating system, just give any Linux a try.

Linux comes in many ‘flavors’ viz. Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, Red Hat, Gentoo etc.

There are now versions of Linux Operating System to match your needs…….Generally if you want to have general home use like watching movies or enjoying some music, then Ubuntu, Fedora, or Mandriva should be good enough.

Lnux can be installed besides your current operating systems but you have to take some care while installing linux, keep a watch on the disk partitioner in the setup to avoid losing all your existing data. You can get all the help you need from the Ubuntu or Fedora websites as well as the forums contain many great discussions which will guide you through proper installation of the Operating System.

The library of software and codecs is very huge for Ubuntu and some other Operating Systems, but you need a PPPoE (ADSL Broadband) connection to download the codecs that you need. Once you download all the required codecs and software which you need, the Linux System can rival any Windows or Mac system, and the best part is you don’t have to pay for any part of the Operating System.

The operating supports many tasks and surfing the internet, creating and viewing documents, listening to music and watching movies is very easy and great.

There are some shortfalls too:

There are some new devices whose drivers arrive late for the Linux version…..this is because it takes time for the people in the community to test and release a working driver. Also, the software required are different from those of the Microsoft Windows and are lesser available. But, as the popularity of linux increases, the software available for linux is also increasing….

So, happy Linuxing until the next Article on Linux AND Open Source……..

How to speed up surfing speeds on your connection by changing DNS

June 6th, 2009 No comments

About DNS :

It can happen that you have a good connection but the websites don’t open as quickly as you had expected. This can happen due to slow DNS ( Domain Name Service ) which has to “convert / translate” the names of the website to the numerical address of the server which is something like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and connect to the server.

If the server responds with good speeds then probably you can get a lot faster browsing experience……I stress on “browsing” because download speeds are not affected by changing your DNS servers….

OpenDNS claims they have the fastest DNS servers (and free!!!) which are spread in many locations in the world to speed up your browsing. They also provide many other services like content filtering and ip / website banning. This can be helpful if you want to ban a specific category of sites like adult or nudity etc. The filter works great and the speeds are also good. You can even change the error message whenever  it notifies the users that the site is blog. You can even implement the filtering and use OpenDNS service for more than one IP’s.

If you are on dial-up or do not have a static IP, then you can download a small utility called OpenDNS Updater, which updates your current dynamic IP to the openDNS servers to effectively implement your filtering rules and for a better browsing experience.

So….if you need to change your DNS servers then foloow this simple procedure.

1. Go to Control Panel —> Network Connections.

2. Then select the connection which you use to connect to the internet and right click it and then click on Properties.

3. Then select the Networking tab…

4. Select Internet Protocol and Click on Properties.

5. Then Change the DNS servers. Primary DNS : 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS : 208.67.220.220
dns2

6. Click on Ok and close all the tabs. The changes will not take place until you reconnect to the Internet.
