Test if your DNS servers are fast or degrading the performance of your Internet Connection

June 8th, 2010 No comments

DNS servers are the one who connect your computer to the url which you type in to your browser. The DNS servers assigned by the ISP usually have faster response times, but may be slow in the lookup due to high load or due to bad performing servers….

This tool helps you to test which is the best DNS server for you….The tool is knows as DNSBench.

DNS Bench performs a test on predefined nameservers and of-course, you can supply the DNS servers of your choice to be tested.

DNS Bench comprehensively tests all the DNS server and generates a report which can be copied onto clipboard, which can be analyzed later.

We liked the way it tested the DNS servers for reliability and the response time of the servers.

All we can do is recommend this software to you…..DOWNLOAD it for FREE!

You can visit the Official Website >>CLICK HERE<<

In our case too the ISP’s nameservers were fast but were low on caching so we switched onto Google’s DNS Servers.

Primary DNS : 8.8.8.8

Alt. DNS          : 8.8.4.4

Have a Happy time surfing……

Google DNS – browse at faster speeds by changing your DNS server

December 30th, 2009 No comments

We have already seen OpenDNS, a free DNS service which is fast and reliable and here is another name which speaks of reliability….Yes its Google.

Google’s DNS servers claim that they resolve DNS queries quicker to provide a faster browsing experience.

Google has introduced a free DNS service, but it does not provide any customization and filtering as OpenDNS does.

The IP addresses of Google DNS Servers are:

Primary DNS    8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS    8.8.4.4

Some people confuse it with Level3 DNS servers because the IP range of Google’s DNS servers fall within the IP address rangle allocated to Level3 Communications.

But Google runs its servers themselves and says that users will be protected by DoS Attacks (Denial of Service) which sometimes happen through DNS servers. Also Google claims that the servers are fast and are located at many places around the world which provides fast access to users in many countries.

I must remind you that changing your DNS servers DOES NOT MEAN faster DOWNLOAD SPEEDS.

If you want to use Google DNS servers, simply point your connections Primary and secondary DNS servers to the one which have been given above.

A detailed guide is given in my earlier post on how to use OpenDNS servers for better browsing experience.

How to speed up surfing speeds on your connection by changing DNS

June 6th, 2009 No comments

About DNS :

It can happen that you have a good connection but the websites don’t open as quickly as you had expected. This can happen due to slow DNS ( Domain Name Service ) which has to “convert / translate” the names of the website to the numerical address of the server which is something like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and connect to the server.

If the server responds with good speeds then probably you can get a lot faster browsing experience……I stress on “browsing” because download speeds are not affected by changing your DNS servers….

OpenDNS claims they have the fastest DNS servers (and free!!!) which are spread in many locations in the world to speed up your browsing. They also provide many other services like content filtering and ip / website banning. This can be helpful if you want to ban a specific category of sites like adult or nudity etc. The filter works great and the speeds are also good. You can even change the error message whenever  it notifies the users that the site is blog. You can even implement the filtering and use OpenDNS service for more than one IP’s.

If you are on dial-up or do not have a static IP, then you can download a small utility called OpenDNS Updater, which updates your current dynamic IP to the openDNS servers to effectively implement your filtering rules and for a better browsing experience.

So….if you need to change your DNS servers then foloow this simple procedure.

1. Go to Control Panel —> Network Connections.

2. Then select the connection which you use to connect to the internet and right click it and then click on Properties.

3. Then select the Networking tab…

4. Select Internet Protocol and Click on Properties.

5. Then Change the DNS servers. Primary DNS : 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS : 208.67.220.220

6. Click on Ok and close all the tabs. The changes will not take place until you reconnect to the Internet.
