Increase your GMail and Google Account Security by 2 step verification

December 23rd, 2011 No comments

Wondering why am I writing such a post…….Its really important to be protected, rather than feel frustrated after your account is hacked.

Its very important for you to protect your e-mail account from being hacked……just like you don’t give out your credit card number to anyone that you don’t trust or giving it out to a stranger.

You’d probably be wondering, “what the heck more is needed other than my password…”.

Yes…Password is important, and having a long and complex password is “recommended”, but only a password cannot protect you fully.

GMail has now come up with a 2 step verification process……just in case your account is accessed from a location that Google thinks is “not legitimate”.

Check your Account activity by scrolling down the GMail Page and click on Last Account Activity :: Details

By default, GMail alerts users if their account has been accessed from an Unknown location, but offers no protection unless you complete the 2-step verification.

You need to provide your mobile phone number in order to verify your identity…….and in case of misuse, you phone number is asked along with the verification code, which is sent to you over an SMS or phone call by Google…..

The above action will strengthen your account security.

And….. You must also use the latest version of browser and Operating System must be up-to-date……Also please scan your computer and remove any viruses or malware.

Security with social bookmarking sites – Orkut, facebook, twitter and else

April 5th, 2010 No comments

I have written this post after one of my friends claimed that her orkut account was hacked……Yes…its really bad if someone logs into your account and makes some unacceptable changes…..

SO, what can you do to protect your account from being hacked, or allowing somebody else to log-in easily.

1 )  The first and the most important thing to do first is to always ensure that you log-out of your account while closing the browser. Most people don’t know this and then their account is mis-used.

2) Always remember to clear the check box which says “Remember password on this computer”, Whenever you use orkut / facebook / twitter on shared computer. This won’t store your user-id and password on the computer which might give others an easy chance to log-into your account.

3) Make sure that the computer you surf does not have tons of viruses…..Sometimes some programs can monitor your keyboard strokes (Keyloggers), whilst some others can send the data to hacker’s computers over the internet and can actually cause your account to be hacked.

4) Also ensure that you do not provide any login / password info on pages which are outside the social networking website…..These are known as phishing attacks and are becoming more popular forms of targeting the users. So stay aware and do not provide any login information elsewhere.

These 4 easy steps of caution will help in increasing the security of your account.

And there is plenty of security tips provided by the social networking sites, please read all the notifications carefully.

How to speed up surfing speeds on your connection by changing DNS

June 6th, 2009 No comments

About DNS :

It can happen that you have a good connection but the websites don’t open as quickly as you had expected. This can happen due to slow DNS ( Domain Name Service ) which has to “convert / translate” the names of the website to the numerical address of the server which is something like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and connect to the server.

If the server responds with good speeds then probably you can get a lot faster browsing experience……I stress on “browsing” because download speeds are not affected by changing your DNS servers….

OpenDNS claims they have the fastest DNS servers (and free!!!) which are spread in many locations in the world to speed up your browsing. They also provide many other services like content filtering and ip / website banning. This can be helpful if you want to ban a specific category of sites like adult or nudity etc. The filter works great and the speeds are also good. You can even change the error message whenever  it notifies the users that the site is blog. You can even implement the filtering and use OpenDNS service for more than one IP’s.

If you are on dial-up or do not have a static IP, then you can download a small utility called OpenDNS Updater, which updates your current dynamic IP to the openDNS servers to effectively implement your filtering rules and for a better browsing experience.

So….if you need to change your DNS servers then foloow this simple procedure.

1. Go to Control Panel —> Network Connections.

2. Then select the connection which you use to connect to the internet and right click it and then click on Properties.

3. Then select the Networking tab…

4. Select Internet Protocol and Click on Properties.

dns1

5. Then Change the DNS servers. Primary DNS : 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS : 208.67.220.220
dns2

6. Click on Ok and close all the tabs. The changes will not take place until you reconnect to the Internet.
