Virtual Memory / Paging File in Windows Operating System

February 17th, 2009 No comments

Do you know that besides the RAM that is installed in the system, sometimes more memory is required for running some applications or in certain situations.

A file created as memory, on the Hard disk is known as Paging File.

When windows is installed on a system, Paging File is managed by default. i.e. Windows automatically determines what amount of Paging File is required for the system and if more is needed then the Paging File is increased.

Though it is recommended to keep the Paging File settings to default, you can change the settings depending on the configuration of your system.

Suppose if your system has more than 3 GB of RAM, then the paging file is used less and hence the performance of your system becomes better as the hard disk is always slower than the RAM.

You can find these settings by right clicking on My Computer — Properties — Advanced — Performance — Advanced — Change.

Here you can disable or change the size of the Paging File.
