Sun xVM VirtualBox – install multiple OS on single computer easily

December 10th, 2009 No comments

Sun xVM VirtualBox is a freeware from Sun Microsystems, the creators of Java, Solaris and many other great open source products.

Sun xVM VirtualBox is a software which allows users to install multiple virtual operating systems on their computer which do not affect your current system configuration.

Virtual operating systems do not affect the system in any way, as the virtual operating system creates a seperate
area in which operating systems can be installed. The operating system which is installed as Virtual OS does not
know that it is being installed on a “Virtual Machine” instead of an “Actual Machine or Host Machine”.

I have installed Sun VirtualBox on my system and loaded Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop….Look at the screen-shot below.

VirtualBox Main Screen

VirtualBox Main Screen

Installing an Virtual Operating System is very easy. You have to first create a Virtual Machine by Clicking on the New Button. You have to adjust the amount of Hard-Disk space and the RAM to be allocated to the machine.

You have to create the Virtual Machine and prefer the Dynamically Expanding Storage as it expands only when the space is used up by the operating system. (Though I have observed that it causes a lot of fragmentation of the file in which the Virtual OS is installed). You should allocate atleast 8GB HDD space for Linux operating system and more if you want to install an operating system like Windows Vista.

VirtualBox also allows the user to use the internet if available on the host operating system. The software creates a VirtualBox Host-Only network which allows the sharing of internet.

You can also use your removable drives (USB drives) and you can also use shared folders to share files from the host machine.

I have installed the Ubuntu OS which has Firefox installed and I have used it to surf the internet without any settings or any procedure on the Virtual Operating System. If you have internet running on the host machine then you can directly use the internet on the Virtual OS.

What about AMD Fusion, Overdrive ??? How to use and Why???

May 6th, 2009 No comments

AMD Fusion is an application developed by AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) for use with computers running AMD processors……

AMD states that using this application improves the gaming performance of the computer…..Let’s see what it really does???

AMD Fusion is an application which switches many of the services in the Windows XP / Vista operating system…… It helps in reducing the Load on the processor so that it is free to perform while running games, which may increase frame rate on slower systems…..But the faster systems may not see much improvement in frame rate / performance…..

A word about AMD OverDrive…..

AMD OverDrive is an application which is meant to overclock AMD / ATI systems…..It overclocks many components of the computer like Processor FID / VID (Core Frequency / Core Voltage), Graphics Card Core Speed, Memory (RAM) and many others……

But AMD provides a warning at the start of the program that overclocking may risk the components……But hey…..If you wanna have fun then overclock responsibly and in small steps….Also check the stability of the system after every small step…..

How to “effectively” use your USB flash / thumb drive

May 4th, 2009 No comments

Many people (or rather everyone) has their own USB thumb / flash drive. We use its portability to transfer data from one PC to another……But have you ever imagined the use of the Flash drive other than only copying and carrying data around…….Let me guide you on how to use your flash drive other than only “copying”…

So……Ever imagined that your flash drive can contain an mini – Operating system…just like your PC…..

Yes…there are many small Linux and even a portable version of Windows XP is available to be installed onto a flash drive. But the Windows Operating System consumes a lot of space from the thumb drive which cannot be used for storing any other data……

There is also an alternative which is pretty light-weight and consumes lesser space and the best part is it uses resources of the Host (The PC to which you connect the flash drive)……It is known as MojoPac……It is a freely available package and I have provided the download link at the bottom at the page…..

So….is it only that you can install operating systems on your thumb drive and what about more???

You also have a lot of portable applications available to be installed on the Flash drive as well as Antivirus Softwares….which protect your data….as well as the small PC you carry around in your pocket….
