Free Web hosts that provide space for your own website

September 18th, 2009 No comments

Now in the last article I helped my blogger community who were interested in getting some good websites which provide blog hosting…Actually it is a good place to start……

Now for the bigger enthusiasts, who want to break free and design your own HTML pages and host on the web, that too for free, you have come to the right place….

Below are two Good Web hosts which I have tried and tested, and again I have kept the list very short so that my dear readers do not get confused in choosing the best one:

1. ByetHost : Now, this is one generous host which provides a lot of free space and ad-free hosting. This means that the sites won’t contain any ads which are put up by the host. It offers 5.5GB of host and provides 200 GB monthly transfer limit, so that you can be rest assured that you can get your site and handle large traffic……Also offers MySQL, PHP and 50 free sudomains and free e-mail accounts….. Sign up for this service and you won’t regret. Also gives you your own cPanel so that you can manage your site like a pro web-master……

2. TopCities : This is a site which has been online for a very long time…..It has frame ads on the site and provides 150 MB of space….Although this space is sufficient, the readers will be looking on the above host which offers much more…..OK…so this site offers unlimited bandwidth limit and it was great to use this host……

I may have missed out on other hosts but I will be updating the list if necessary……

Create your own blog for free – quick and easy

September 17th, 2009 No comments

Does this title seem fishy….No it is very easy to get your website or blog up and running within a few minutes….

Now, your website can have any content….For e.g. You can make your Personal page, or you can make a blog about technology just like me….and most important of all……I started in the very same way….

I, in my early days started out by making a lot of ugly HTML pages on web servers which offer free hosting…..So its better to get some experience on how to make your pages on the internet and starting out….

So here are some good web hosts which help you create a blog:

1. WordPress : This blog uses the scripts provided by WordPress. wordpress.com provides free names and space for your blog, so you can register on the website and get started with making your blog…..Its very easy and fun and FREE….

2. Blogger : One of the most popular services to create your Blog…..Now owned by Google Inc. . It has seamless integration with Google and provides a lot of great features and good support from the Blogger community….The best part is this service is Free too.

There are many other blogging services but you can start off by using one or both the services…..They are great and reliable and so I don’t really recommend you to sign up for any other service, because the above two are simply superb…..

Keep a watch and I will provide a list of great web-hosts in my very next article…..Stay Tuned!

Make the most with Linux – Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva – Guide

September 3rd, 2009 No comments

So, you got a new computer and that new internet connection, when you think about operating system, just give any Linux a try.

Linux comes in many ‘flavors’ viz. Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, Red Hat, Gentoo etc.

There are now versions of Linux Operating System to match your needs…….Generally if you want to have general home use like watching movies or enjoying some music, then Ubuntu, Fedora, or Mandriva should be good enough.

Lnux can be installed besides your current operating systems but you have to take some care while installing linux, keep a watch on the disk partitioner in the setup to avoid losing all your existing data. You can get all the help you need from the Ubuntu or Fedora websites as well as the forums contain many great discussions which will guide you through proper installation of the Operating System.

The library of software and codecs is very huge for Ubuntu and some other Operating Systems, but you need a PPPoE (ADSL Broadband) connection to download the codecs that you need. Once you download all the required codecs and software which you need, the Linux System can rival any Windows or Mac system, and the best part is you don’t have to pay for any part of the Operating System.

The operating supports many tasks and surfing the internet, creating and viewing documents, listening to music and watching movies is very easy and great.

There are some shortfalls too:

There are some new devices whose drivers arrive late for the Linux version…..this is because it takes time for the people in the community to test and release a working driver. Also, the software required are different from those of the Microsoft Windows and are lesser available. But, as the popularity of linux increases, the software available for linux is also increasing….

So, happy Linuxing until the next Article on Linux AND Open Source……..

How to record cassette / tape music or FM radio into digital music

June 18th, 2009 No comments

You probably wanted your music in digital formats like the MP3, which a long time ago came in audio cassettes / tapes. You may have evn wanted to record something off the FM radio station which you had liked a lot….Here ends the quest. You can do it with your own computer only by using a single cable.

Yes, you have to plug one end of the cable (3.5 mm audio jack) into the audio player and the other into the Line-In jack at the back of the computer. By doing this, you can directly get the audio output onto the computer!!!

Now, for capturing the audio, you need a program which can do it. Nero has SoundTrax program in Nero 7 version. Or you can even use Audacity which is GPL (GNU Public License) which is actually an Open source software.

To record, you need to select the input as Line-In source in audacity and press the record button to record the audio.

You can plug in your audio cassette player, FM radio or just about anything and record it off….

You can get the 3.5mm audio cable (which has jacks on both the site) in all Radio Shack outlets as well as leading computer stores…

Now isn’t that really interesting….
