Make your wireless network more secure….Learn How you can do it???

May 13th, 2009 admin View Comments

Using wi-fi at your place……Are you sure that it is secure too…..

Many people use wi-fi networks without the knowledge of the administrator..i.e. they use it illegally…..So there is an urgent need to secure your wi-fi network from unauthorized access…..I will guide you through some important techniques when used together will make your network highly secure…..

The first and the most important thing is the location of your wi-fi router…..Place it strategically so that its signal remains within your home only…..

Placing it at the center of the house is a very good idea so that the walls of your house will weaken the signal considerably that moves out of your house.

The next important thing is:

Securing your network with inbuilt security within windows…..Use either WPA or WEP Encryption….so that your data is not easily *VISIBLE* to people outside your network……By using the encryption technologies, you assign an access key to every user on the network, without which it is not possible to use the nnetwork…..
(Remember that WPA is better than WEP,but it is not compatible with all wireless devices…).

Another important feature is present on the hardware of the router itself that is disabled by default…..I am talking about the MAC Address filtering…(MAC – It is a unique address assigned to every network card). Here’s what you need to do….

Invoke your router configuration menu by typing in the address of your router….(Generally 192.168.0.1)…
Then find MAC Address filter and enable it, if disabled…..Also include all the MAC Addresses that are going to use the network……This filter helps prevent users other than the MAC Addresses you have mentioned in your filter….

These techniques altogether will make your wi-fi network secure and have peace of mind (regarding un-lawful usage of your network..)…..

Till then Happy Surfing….and Thanks for reading this article….

Autorun Viruses / Trojan Horse Malware

January 24th, 2009 admin Comments off

Do you regularly plug-in your USB pen / thumb drive into your computer. Then you are at a greater risk of autorun viruses.

These viruses embed themselves to the system by modifying the autorun.inf entry files of all or some local drives / partitions and run whenever you double click or open your drives. It works in the background and many a times an anti-virus software doen not detect it but it keeps infecting all the removable devices that are connected to the infected computer. This in turn spreads the infection and keeps the virus chain alive.

If you try to delete the autorun.inf file from your drive then you cannot access the drive directly by double clicking. And the virus automatically creates a new autorun.inf file to keep itself *ALIVE*

Now some free tools available on the internet help your PC to be protected before it gets infected with such kind of viruses.

Below are the links for downloading the Autorun Virus Removal Software.

Spyware: Meaning and its effects

Most people know about viruses which can harm their computer and so they install an antivirus software and think

that their PC is now protected.

But, the story doesn’t end here, there is another breed of harmful programs which can actually “spy” on all your

activities like your internet surfing session, it can log your keystrokes and in the extreme case your system may

be vulnerable for a attack from hackers.

So, there is an Immediate need to Arm your Computer against these type of attacks by using an Antispyware Software.

There are many available on the Internet which claim to clean your computer but actually they are “Spyware”

disguised as an “AntiSpyWare” software.

If you use your computer for shopping on the Internet then you are at an greater risk as they can steal your credit

card information. It is done by logging whatever keys you type on your keyboard and then it is sent to a remote PC

which is controlled by a unknown person.

So why stay at risk, Get yourselves an Antispyware.

I have been using “SpyBot Search & Destroy”, a free software which is really effective and has a very large

database of spyware. It also has a resident scanner which scans all the incoming and outgoing packets when

connected to the internet and protects the registry and alerts you whenever an un-authorised change has been made

to your system.

What is a Firewall…

January 15th, 2009 admin View Comments

A firewall is a program, which protects your computer against hack-attempts and keeps your PC secure.

A firwall sits between your computer and the Internet and Scans all the incoming data as well as it protects all the open communication ports for the Internet.

Hence if you use Internet connection and want your PC to remain secure from threats from the Internet then you must get a FireWall for your PC.

There are a lot of FREE firewall software available which have good performance.

Personally speaking the Best Firewall that I have come across is ZoneAlarm Firewall. But alternatives such as Comodo FireWall are also great.

Below are some links to such free firwalls.
