Laptop battery issues ( Increase your laptop battery backup time )

April 25th, 2009 No comments

Do you notice that the battery of the laptop runs lesser than before……

Well this happens due to the Li-Ion battery chemistry and electronic circuitry which limits the amount of charging after a certain period of time….

Lets look in more detail……

The laptop has an advanced system to monitor the charging levels and to monitor that all the small cells inside the battery unit are functioning properly…

After many charging / discharging cycles, some cells start to die (they cannot be charged). But, sometimes (or rather mostly) the electronic circuit on the battery unit incorrectly marks some *good* cells as *bad* and this, eventually results in the decrease of capacity of tha battery and your laptops runs for lesser time on the battery.

Hence, you can get the cells to charge by Conditioning the battery once in atleast 30 charge / discharge cycles to keep the battery in good shape.

Conditioning your battery is  so simple:

1. Charge your battery fully….

2. Then, go to Control Panel –> Power Options –> and disable all options which put the laptop into standby or hibernate. So that when the laptop battery is at critical level, the laptop won’t sleep….

3. Let the laptop battery run out of juice and then after sometime, the laptop will automatically turn off, when the battery is empty.

4. If the laptop battery gets hot, then let it cool for sometime.

5. Charge your laptop fully before using it.

6. You will atleast gain 5% more battery capacity… (I gained 15% on my Compaq Laptop).

You can check your battery capacity by Installing Everest Ultimate Edition (It displays information about your computer) and checking in Power Options within the program…

Test if your USB flash drive is Genuine ( Original ) or a Fake ( Counterfeit / Cheap Duplicate)

April 5th, 2009 No comments

If you have bought an USB flash / thumb drive, then a word of Caution…..because many sellers on popular sites on eBay are offering its users Fake / Counterfeit drives in disguise of Good Brands like Sony, Corsair, Kingston etc.

Many drives are coming out of china which look just like the Originals but are unreliable, sometimes contain spyware / keyloggers or show incorrect memory capacity.

If you have a drive which shows incorrect capacity, opt for an replacement right away and do not store any confidential or private data on the flash drive.

If you are looking for a new USB Flash drive / Memory Card etc. then you *must* buy from an authorised seller. Generally a list of authorised sellers is available on the manufacturers website.

If you have purchased from eBay or other third-party client, then it makes sense to test your newly purchased drive for genuineness.

H2testw is a software which checks your drive for genuineness and generates a report. It has been awarded Gold Standard for its detection capabilities.

The software is small, easy to use and no need to install. It has English / German language options.

Graphics card upgrade (know which type of card to choose)…

April 1st, 2009 No comments

Have you been experiencing that your old PC is not running the latest games now as it had been doing so before….Do games ask for high requirements not met by your PC….Most probably in this case, it is your Graphics Card which is guilty….

The other hardware requirements are not as important as that of the Graphics Card. There are rapid advancements in the graphics in the games and hence more processing power is needed to run the game by a system. Also the trend in graphics hardware is such that any Graphics Card is rendered pretty useless in a period of about two years….

So, are you thinking of upgrading your Graphics Card….There are some steps to determine which is the right card for your system……

The Current systems have an PCI-E x16 (acronym for Peripheral Communication Interface-Express x16) slot which can handle all the Graphics Cards which are marked for systems having this slot. Always check the details in the Motherboard manual befor coming to any conclusion.

The Older Systems had an AGP (acronym for Accelerated Graphics Port) or had an built-in Graphics Card (like Intel x3100 or SiS 760GX in my old PC). So if you have a PC with an AGP slot then go for one marked for running on AGP Systems.

Jargon Buster:

There are namely two companies which offer Graphics Card to consumers:

1. ATI (Currently owned by AMD)…

2. NVIDIA.

***If you are looking for PCI-E x16 slot then consider the following cards from NVIDIA:

1. GeForce 8800GT

2. GeForce 9600GT

3. NVIDIA GTX200

4. NVIDIA GTX 280

***If you are looking for an ATI Based Graphics Card for PCI-E x16 then….

1. Radeon HD3200

2. Radeon HD 3470

3. Radeon HD 4850 X2

4. Radeon HD 4870 (X2 – Dual Core Graphics Card.)

The Radeon HD 4870 X2 is the current market leader in Graphics……
