AMD Phenom II Processors

March 11th, 2009 No comments

AMD has released a newer version of their Phenom line of processors called Phenom II.

AMD Phenom

Phenom II is a 45nm processor which was also known earlier as “Codename Dragon”. hence it has around 758 million transistors as compared to 450 million transistors on the earlier Phenom series processors.  The Phenom processor is available in Quad-Core (X4) and Triple Core (X3) variants. The Phenom II X4 is currently available in two versions, Phenom II 920 and Phenom II 940.

AMD claims that Phenom II processors are  more overclockable and are stable at high speeds. The Phenom II X4 940 runs at 3.00 GHz which means that overclocking the chip will yield higher speeds and hence better performance.

With the new processor AMD also supports DDR-III which is called the new generation of RAM. The processor will perform at its best when used alongwith a 790FX chipset, though it still supports the old AM2+ chipset. A newer southbridge SB750 helps in better overclocking the Phenom processors as it has Advanced Clock Calibration technology, but it is currently available on limited motherboards.

Hence if you want to upgrade your older phenom processor then the Phenom II X4 940 is the way to go.
